Review of July Minutes

PR Committee Update

An overview of activities currently in process with the Public Relations Committee was presented by Mayor Welch. She updated the committee on the Murdoch Bridge communication. Mayor Welch also indicated that the Public Relations Committee is looking at various communication efforts for the future, but have agreed to focus on the holidays right now.  She discussed radio ads being placed with 102.5 from the week before Thanksgiving through Christmas as well as the reindeer that the Parks Department is working on to spruce up the holidays.

Holiday Update

The wreaths for the Webster Wreath Walk were discussed. Joan will send out a list of current participants to the group. Efforts to involve the Crossroads Business District in more City activities was also discussed in length.

Business Communications – How do we reach our businesses?

The discussion of how to market the City led directly into the concerns about how the businesses communicate with one another within their districts and between districts and how there is no method of sharing or bridge building between the business districts.  A suggestion was made to have another City-wide meeting to invite all of the districts and continue to involve them in communication.

Mara Perry updated the commission on the process and what her goals are to get a coordinated list of contacts.  She will work with Joan Jadali to get this addressed during the time that we issue business license renewals.

As a part of this discussion, we have decided that we need to determine exactly what we want to communicate as city-wide communication efforts and in what ways we should do this (paper vs electronic).

Mara Perry will research this further. We can also ask businesses what they feel is the best way to communicate with them when we have our next city-wide business meeting with them.

Goals for the BDC

1.    Develop better communication between businesses

2.    Compile contact information for both electronic and hard copy distribution to the various members of all the organizations that is kept up to date

3.    Develop how to get messages out

4.    Increase networking among businesses

Chalegne O’Brien indicated that she would like to keep as an agenda item the property tax appraisal process and will look into more information on this process for a future update to the commission.  Mayor Welch indicated that on November 8th, the City Council and Webster Groves School District will be meeting with the Assessor’s Office to discuss how commercial property is assessed.

Rebecca Olson shared highlights of the upcoming Santa on the Run activity on December 1st. She indicated that area businesses that want to participate in the program and want to offer discounts or other items to support the participants can place a “Santa Stops Here” sign in their business window.

Wine Tasting at Garland Wines today—Italian Wines.

Last Farmers Market of the year is this week.

The Fireworks display will be on December 31st at Memorial Park in the evening.
