4.  Farmer’s Market discussion

Grow provided brief overview of committee work:  survey has been sent to vendors;  we will be asking both Taxing Districts for their level of interest, knowing that operation will need to be financially subsidized annually, and hope to make a decision on taxing district and day/time of week by end of month; goal is to open in June.  Gunnar Brown, Ferguson Farmer’s Market Master, will be here shortly to answer questions.

5.  Updates:

A.     Webster Wonderland. Mayor Welch distributed 3-page update (see attached).  Total cost was about $15,000 with 2 taxing districts contributing $5,000 each.  Rich suggested a tree lighting event at City Hall be reinstituted next year.

B.     Web Site: Wylie updated status of the business directory web site.  Launch has been delayed by personal health issues of a consultant, need to develop text, and refined expectations by the committee.  Web site launch is expected later this month.

6.  Goals for FY2011

Mayor Welch initiated discussion regarding the year ahead, the charge of the BDC, and any activities that may have budget implications for the FY2011 budget year.  Objectives suggested include:

  • develop marketing package
  • what it takes to start a business in Webster Groves
  • maintain inventory of available retail space

4. (resumed)  Ferguson Farmer’s Market

Gunnar Brown, Market Master for Ferguson Farmer’s Market offered following:

  • Market opened in 2003; Saturdays 8-12; tried Wednesdays in 2nd year but did not work:  too few vendors, bad weather, and same buyers came on Saturdays.
  • Typically 25-30 vendors; as many as 40
  • started with 6 tents, quickly added 6 more.  Cost of tent is about $200
  • they put up extra tents for things such as information, entertainment, children
  • ratio is about 3:1 produce sellers to crafts
  • produce vendors tend to be seasonal, crafts tend to be week-to-week
  • Market is subsidized by the taxing district and City
  • Market manager is a contract employee of City overseen by Taxing District
  • Committee of the taxing district, supplemented by some farmers, serve as the market board of directors
  • Annual market budget is about $43-44,000, of which $30,000 is market manager for 20 hrs/week
  • City provides free electricity and water, some tables; there is no rent
  • Volunteers put up and take down tents.  Need convenient storage.
  • County permits and scales are the responsibility of the vendors.
  • They do have a regular providing food for consumption
  • Sanitation is a port-a-potty at $80/month that is left at the site
